Jaquard-woven cotton-blend tapestry pillow, handcrafted by master tapestry weavers in Cornwall.19 x19" flat; 16" x 16"x 6" stuffed.
This fine tapestry pillow is based on an early 16th Century wall hanging, which can be seen at the Burrell Collection in Glasgow. It was originally woven to commemorate the wedding in 1514 of Claude, daughter of Louis XII, to Francis I. The wall hanging is typical of the favourite pleasures and pastimes of the time. The original is woven on this warp and the colours are all of vegetable origin. Shading or transition from dark to light, is achieved by means of yellow and white hatching. This process gives the impression of light falling from the top of the panels and creates a strong effect of decorative unity.
