Jaquard-woven cotton-blend tapestry pillow, handcrafted by master tapestry weavers in Cornwall.19 x19" flat; 16" x 16"x 6" stuffed.
This fine tapestry cushion has been faithfully reproduced from scenes found on the original Bayeux Tapestry from the 11th Century. The 230' x 20" of linen is made up of eight lengths embroidered in two-ply wool, using stem and outline stitch for contours and eight distinguishable colours.
The fifty scenes depicted in the tapestry show a wealth of activities, including hunting, ship-building, navigation, cooking, battles & defence work; along with 623 humans, 202 horses, 55 dogs, 505 other animals, 37 buildings, 41 ships & nearly 2,000 letters.
Many of these subjects were still living when the tapestry was made, so accurate depiction is likely. Recent analysis suggests that, contrary to past belief, it was probably made at Canterbury, one of Europe's leading embroidery schools.
