Debuting in March, 1937, the Southern Pacific called the Daylight "The Most Beautiful Train in the World". The air conditioned streamliner’s journey along the California coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles offered spectacular views, and meals in the Diner Car could be had less than a dollar. Amenities included porters, maids, and radio service. The all-passenger train also featured a Tavern Car, Coffee Shop, and a Parlor Observation Car, and was pulled by a magnificent red, orange and black steam locomotive.
Later rechristened the Coast Daylight, and dieselized in 1955, the Southern Pacific continued to run the train until 1971, when Amtrak took over service.
