HEREFORD CATHEDRAL CHRIST & DRAGONS STONEWORK
Hereford Cathedral, Lady Chapel. c.1235
The head on this quite complicated piece of carving is thought to be representational of Christ. The Green Dragons are quite naively portrayed - the tails of two evolve into sprigs of foliage at their tips whilst the central one has two branches of foliage sprouting from his mouth. It is not unusual for animals and foliage to run into each other in carvings of this period.
Approx height: 3 3/4 inches (9 1/2 cm).

WELLS CATHEDRAL WYVERN & DRAGON STONEWORK
Wyvern and dragon fighting roof boss. Wells Cathedral, north nave aisle. c.1240
This boss, situated next to the four dragon heads boss (miniature number 19), shows a dragon fighing a wyvern (a winged dragon with only one pair of legs). The carver has imbued this piece of work with real energy and movement - one can almost feel the grip of those claws as the dragons grapple with each other.
Approx height: 4 inches (10 cm).

EXETER CATHEDRAL THOMAS a'BECKETT STONEWORK
The murder of Thomas a Beckett roof boss. Exeter Cathedral, nave. c.1350
This, the westernmost boss in the nave, is widely considered to be the finest boss in Britain. It depicts the murder of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury Cathedral at the hands of King Henry II's knights in 1170. The figures are accurately carved and arranged with a fine sense of overall design. This boss has been painted since World War II, but was in all probability painted when originally carved.
Approx height: 4 1/8 inches (10 1/2 cm).

EXETER CATHEDRAL SAMPSON STONEWORK
Sampson and the lion roof boss. Exeter Cathedral, choir. c.1307
This boss, which has very realistically carved oak leaves and still retains its original colouring, is unusually well documented. It was carved in 1307 by a Mr William Montacute from "just over the border" in Somerset, at a cost of just 5/- (25 Pence in modern currency!!) to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral. Both Sampson and the Lion are realistically carved and arranged to form a well balanced design.
Approx height: 4 1/8 inches (10 1/2 cm).
